Welcome Welcome to Wolverhampton Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering Department at the Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust. We are based in the Deanesly Centre at New Cross hospital, Wolverhampton. For directions click here. Old records show that Medical Physics work with radioactive sources was first carried out in The Royal Hospital Wolverhampton in the late 1920’s. During the second world war, like many other departments the work with radioactive materials moved to the basement to offer some protection from any bombs that were dropped, and this is where it continued for many years after. The department essentially came to be known as Medical Physics in 1968, with the purchase of a cobalt unit. At that time the head of department was supported by 1 electronics technician, 2 mould room technicians, 2 physicists and one technician. |

Following a move to a purpose built radiotherapy facility in 1996, the department now bears no resemblance to how it was then. We have a large department of highly motivated and well qualified staff covering both Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering. Our department consists of 14 clinical scientists, 58 clinical technologists, 3 secretaries and 3 trainees. Besides the main hub of the department in the Deanesly Centre, we have clinical engineering labs in renal, maternity, general electronics, heart & lung, medical device trainers as well as operating a bed/mattress and equipment library. |
