Radiotherapy

Lee Price, Chief Clinical Technologist (Radiotherapy Physics)

I started as a trainee Medical Technical Officer (later to be renamed Clinical Technologist) in 2002, which involved ‘on the job’ training accompanied by day/block release study leave to complete my four year degree course.

In the January of 2005 I was rewarded with a substantive contract, guaranteeing me a permanent position pending successful qualification. Upon qualifying in 2006 I gained the role of Senior Clinical Technologist, followed by promotion to Chief in 2009. None of this would have been possible without the support received from the Department.

From stumbling across the field of radiotherapy by way of an obscure job advert, I have managed to carve out a successful career in a job that I find very rewarding, having never looked back since. The job satisfaction is immense as it combines my passions for science and helping people.

Working in a medium sized centre has provided me with the opportunity to be involved in a diverse range of techniques, thus acquiring a broad set of transferable skills. Again, the size of the centre has a positive effect on the staff experience. Having worked day in, day out with many of my colleagues for over ten years I often view them as ‘extended family’. New employees always seem to settle in, quickly becoming part of the team.

Living a twenty-five minute commute away, in a suburban village on the northern fringe of Wolverhampton, provides me with a great work-life balance. As well as being close to work I am within a ten minute drive of both the M6 and M54 motorways. As a dog owner, I have plenty of options to get out and enjoy the nearby countryside including the local area of outstanding natural beauty, Cannock Chase.

Being close to Wolverhampton allows me to enjoy my hobbies. I play football twice a week with friends I have made through work and I am a drummer in a band with friends who were colleagues when we formed. It is convenient having a retail park in close proximity to the workplace, also having food outlets, a cinema and gym. For more serious shopping trips, and large variety of restaurants and bars, Birmingham is within easy access by car or rail.
