Tervinder Matharu, Consultant Clinical Scientist (Radiotherapy Physics)

I was fascinated with the radiotherapy speciality and enrolled on to part time MSc course in Medical Radiation Physics based at University of East London and Charing Cross Hospital.

Having completed my first year I was fortunate to be offered a training physicist post at Wolverhampton in 1984. My previous hospital experience together with the relevant qualifications allowed me to develop my career as a Radiotherapy Physicist. One of my earliest achievements was to receive an award at the IPEM conference for presenting our work on stereotactic radiotherapy. The majority of what professionally I know has been purely due to the training I have had and developments that have occurred over the years in the field of Radiotherapy and its implementation at New Cross Hospital.

The quality of the clinical work is of the highest standard, the working relationships amongst teams of different speciality groups are excellent in every way. I came to Wolverhampton when the department was small. There were only a few of us and everybody worked together as a team. In 1995 we moved to a purposely built modern radiotherapy centre with state of the art equipment. I have had a great opportunity to work with many trainee clinical scientists and technologists over the years working on projects which have resulted in presentations at scientific meetings.

The key reasons of my stay at Wolverhampton is my involvement in every aspect of radiotherapy field and my working relationship with the most dedicated and committed team striving to do the best for the patients rather than for self-gains. We all have our strengths and weaknesses and the ability to rely on each other’s expertise is the greatest strength for a wonderful working relationship.

I have been as comfortable living here in Wolverhampton as anywhere else. There are a numbers of excellent private and non-fee paying schools. A large number of outdoor pursuits clubs and other sporting facilities are accessible in many areas. Its easy to get to town centre without negotiating traffic jams. There are other excellent shopping centres nearby with easy access via trains and cars. I live to the West of the City, almost at the edge of Wolverhampton and it takes me 20 minutes to come to work and within a few minutes drive I can access motorway links and be in the countryside.
